Why we’re passionate about cycling

At EaST BUG we believe in building better communities through the many benefits of active transport – particularly cycling:

IMPROVED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

As well as being a great way to keep fit and maintain a healthy weight, regular exercise such as cycling has been shown to increase mental alertness and help stave off conditions such as depression.

SAFER, MORE CONNECTED COMMUNITIES

Moving around by bike or on foot gives us opportunities to interact with our neighbours in ways that are not possible when we travel by car. Active transport fosters independence in children, and can help prolong independent living for the elderly.

STRONG LOCAL BUSINESSES

People who travel by bike or on foot are more likely to shop, dine, and seek entertainment at local businesses. This equates to more local jobs and a stronger economy.

SOCIAL EQUITY

Many people in our community struggle to afford to own cars or the land to park them. Cycling is an affordable transport option allowing access to education and employment opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Bike riding is a pollution-free mode of transport that also reduces the need to build, service and dispose of cars.

MORE ATTRACTIVE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS

Reducing our dependance on cars reduces the need for large paved areas and structures for parking. It creates opportunities for green spaces and more attractive built environments that are not dominated by asphalt and concrete.

RESILIENT CITIES AND SUBURBS

Bicycles offer resilience in the aftermath of natural disasters. Quite simply, bicycles can be used when other forms of transport fail.

ATTRACTING VISITORS AND TOURISTS

Bike friendly neighbourhoods attract tourists and visitors
